Ants are known as social insects because they live in nests and have a social structure.

Ants feed on anything, especially if sugary. When an ant finds food, it will lay a pheromone trail to its nest for other workers to follow.

The Black Garden ant can emerge from nests near buildings and forage for food indoors. These ants can become a nuisance in domestic premises, food premises, hospitals and care homes.  Swarming flights may occasionally take place indoors leaving your conservatory or kitchen full of hundreds of flying ants.

The Pharaohs ant will not be found outdoors as it needs the heat of a building. They will forage over long distance indoors and are small enough to contaminate “sealed” containers. They are regarded as a nuisance and scavenge in kitchens, garbage and also animal excrement, therefore potentially spreading diseases.
